Intel Speeds Up Atom Processor for Netbooks

Posted by | Posted in General | Posted on 02-03-2010

intel-logo-blue Intel Corp. on Monday expanded the Atom processor family with a speedier model that boasts higher clock-speed than predecessors. The new chip is designed for netbooks and will be available from Intel’s partners shortly.

Intel Atom N470 has one x86 core, integrated graphics core, built-in memory DDR2 controller, 1.83GHz clock-speed, 512KB of L2 cache other features. Major OEMs are expected to introduce systems based on this processor over the coming months to further differentiate their netbook offerings with a higher frequency to deliver additional responsiveness for online and basic computing tasks.

The new Atom N470 central processing unit costs $75 in 1000-unit quantities and is currently the most expensive processor for netbooks. It is interesting to note that the chip costs more than higher performance single-core Intel Celeron Mobile processor and its price is very close to that of dual-core Celeron Mobile chips ($80). It should be kept in mind that Intel’s Celeron chips do not feature integrated memory and graphics controllers.

Acer faces challenge to keep netbook market lead in 2010

Posted by | Posted in General | Posted on 25-02-2010

Acer was the largest netbook vendor globally in 2009; however, as it will face increasing competition from Asustek Computer, Samsung Electronics and Hewlett-Packard (HP), the company is making efforts to maintain its leading status in 2010, according to sources from notebook players.

Acer shipped about nine million netbooks in 2009 while Asustek, HP and Samsung shipped 5.4, 4.2 and 2.9 million units, according to figures from Digitimes Research; however, since Acer only expects a slight growth or even flat performance on year for its netbook shipments in 2010, while Asustek, Samsung, and HP aim to increase their shipments to eight million, 7-8 million, and six million units, respectively, Acer’s netbook competitors will significantly narrow their shipment gap, the sources noted.

To maintain its lead, Acer showcased its Nvidia Ion 2-based Aspire One 532G netbook at Mobile World Congress 2010 and plans to launch devices running Google’s Chrome OS in the middle of 2010 with expectations of shipping one million units in the first year, the sources noted.

Hp loads android onto a netbook – The Inquirer

Posted by | Posted in General | Posted on 20-02-2010

HP has joined Acer by putting Google’s Linux-based Android operating system on a netbook.

Branded as a Compaq device, HP’s Airlife 100 netbook is powered by the same Qualcomm Snapdragon ARM processor that’s found in a number of recently released smartphones including Google’s Nexus One.

In fact the main differences between the two devices seem to be the screen size and the almost full-size keyboard on the HP unit.

airlifeThe HP Airlife 100 has a 10.1-inch screen with a 16GB SSD bolstered by an SD card slot. This sort of back-to-basics netbook specification is livened up by integrated WiFi, 3G and GPS. It’s the 3G connectivity that has led to HP partnering with Telefonica to provide wireless access.
